Academic Integrity Procedures for Faculty
Disseminating the "Statement on Academic Integrity":
Discuss the "Statement on Academic Integrity" during the first week of class.
- Provide each student with two copies.
- After reviewing the policy in class, collect a signed copy from each student.
- If a student refuses to sign, write the student's name on the copy and note that he or she refused to sign but was present during the discussion of the policy.
- If students are absent, meet with them to review the policy and collect signed copies.
Procedures for cases of suspected plagiarism:
Because plagiarism is a serious charge, faculty should ensure that each student gets due process.
If you have an instance of suspected plagiarism, please
- Check to see if the plagiarism is inadvertent (e.g.; the student cited the work in Works Cited but did not cite a paraphrase or quotation parenthetically in the text.)
- Try to determine the student's intent (e.g., ask student why the disputed passages weren't cited) and the degree of the offense (one small part is plagiarized--could be inadvertent-- vs. the whole paper--probably not inadvertent).
- Make sure your evidence is sound: You have a copy of the uncredited source.
- Confer with the student to allow him or her to explain.
If the instructor judges a student's work to be inadequately documented or that the student's plagiarism was unintentional, the instructor may require a complete revision of the work in question.
If the instructor judges that the plagiarism is intentional and has appropriate evidence to support the charge, the instructor should choose one of the disciplinary actions listed under "Consequences for Academic Dishonesty."
Procedures for imposing sanctions:
- If you decide to issue a failing grade for the assignment or give an F or N for the course, try to do so informally. Discuss your decision with the student. If the student accepts your decision, the matter ends; however, faculty may choose to pursue charges.
- If the student disputes your decision, inform him or her that you intend to file charges in writing to let the University Judiciary System decide the matter. File charges in writing with the Dean of Students.
- If you seek student disciplinary sanction or suspension or expulsion from the college, you must file charges in writing with the Dean of Students charges to let the University Judiciary System decide the matter.
- To prepare for a Judicial System hearing, provide your case and evidence in writing.
