English with a Professional Focus

A Letter from the Department Head

Robert Morris University offers English students a liberal arts education with a strong professional focus.  Ideally suited for students who excel in reading and writing, the English program embraces the RMU core value of academic excellence by offering small classes with personal attention from professors who are published and award-winning scholars.  Our programs include courses in literature, language, rhetoric, philosophy, professional and creative writing often not available to students before the graduate level.

From our friendly administrative staff to our dedicated faculty to our open and enthusiastic students, the English department as a whole is committed to creating a vibrant and supportive scholarly community that welcomes every student and encourages each one to reach and to surpass his or her educational and personal goals.

The RMU core value of professional focus is a key concept for the English department.  We include an internship in every concentration of the major, and we assist students in charting their pathways to professional careers through research, publishing and editing opportunities on campus so that our students have solid resumes prior to graduation.  In addition, our students are active in all areas of the university, from honor societies to Greek life to athletics, all of which is recorded on RMU's innovative Student Engagement Transcript.

As the department head of English, I welcome you to RMU, and I invite you to participate in our dynamic and welcoming community.
